The school choir, here during the yearly Christmas concert.
School usually starts at eight in the morning and ends at 1.20 in the afternoon for the younger students, while ending at 3.20 for older ones, which means that, especially for the younger age groups, there is enough time to take part in extra-curricular activities after school. To ensure broad participation, the school grants that every second week, school ends at 1.20 for everyone up to grade ten in order to provide the opportunity to participate in those activities, while taking part in at least one extra-curricular activity is compulsory. The offers spread wide areas and are supported financially, factually and personally, a lot of them are carried out in conjunction with external partners.
As seniors have a significantly higher workload compared to juniors, it is not compulsory for them to take part in extra-curricular activities, although participation is appreciated and encouraged where possible. However, taking part can be hard, as the schedule is not adapted to the activities' time slots anymore.
Although project work is mainly taking place outside of school, Ostwald TSA is an integrated activity of the full range of activities. To make sure seniors can attend TSA meetings, they are scheduled in the late afternoon, which gives us more flexibility in the sense of time management.
Robot building and programming
The variety of activities is quite impressive: It includes sports with basketball and soccer being the most typical ones, language training, with Japanese being a rather unique choice in German school's, as well as Spanish, in order to go beyond the mere language lessons held as a part of the curriculum, which only includes English, French and Latin, respectively. There are also more unusual subjects on offer like graffiti painting and break-dancing.
The school choir and drama group are other choices to give students the chance to participate in the school's social life. Moreover, there is also a wide range of academic opportunities with mathematics and scientific subjects on offer, aiming at making the students aim higher in school as well as at competitive events.
Investing time and effort into extra-curricular activities are both pleasure and a strong belief that there is more to school than just classroom teaching. Motivation gets you going, but discipline keeps you going - That is, besides the skills attained and the success achieved, what students are encouraged to realize when joining an activity.
